1 c. flour 1/2 t. vanilla
1/4 t. salt 2 c. canned pitted cherries
1/2 c. sugar 1/4-1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. shortening 1 c. cherry jc. or water
1/2 c. milk
Measure flour, salt, baking pwd. and 1/2 c. sugar into bowl. Add shortening, milk, and vanilla. Beat vigorously with spoon or electric mixer 2 minutes. Pour into greased pan (8 inch square) and cover with drained cherries (liquid reserved). Sprinkle with 1/4-1/2 c. sugar. Heat 1 c. cherry liquid or water to boiling point and pour over top. Bake in 375 oven about 40 minutes. Serve warm, plain or topped with cream, whipped cream or milk. Makes 6 servings at——cents each
