Pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over 1 1/2 c cut up and pitted dates. Add 1/4 cup butter, 1 t. soda and 1 beaten egg.
Sift together 1 cup sugar, 1 1/2 c. flour and 1 t. baking powder and stir into date mixture. Add 1 t. vanilla. Pour batter into oiled 9 by 12″ cake pan bake 30 min @ 350. cool. Make topping by combining 1 cup chopped dates, 3/4 c. boiling water, i cup sugar, 1 T butter and 1/4 t. salt. Cook 10 minutes. Cool, add 1 cup nuts and spread on cake 12 servings.
